As this July 18th marks the 32nd anniversary of the attack on the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA), this Friday the ceremony organized by the Board of Directors of the Israelite Union Association of Concordia, the Board of Directors of the Kehilá Sefaradí Agudat Israel, and the Municipality of Concordia was held.
The ceremony included the lighting of candles and the laying of a floral offering in tribute to the 85 fatal victims, among whom were three residents of Concordia: Rosa Perelmuter, Silvia Portnoy, and Rebeca Behar.
The secretary of the Israelite Union of Concordia, Ernesto Hafter, highlighted the importance of “having memory and maintaining that remembrance, understanding that we are a community that must be united. Memory is something indispensable and essential.”
For his part, the president of the Kehilá Sefaradí Agudat Israel, Adrián Benjuya, alluded to the magnitude of the attack, remarking that “32 years have passed and passing in front of the new AMIA building, with the names of the victims of the July 18, 1994 attack, shakes the soul. An attack that, in addition to the fatal victims and the wounded, left profound consequences for the entire community.”
The Secretary of Cabinet Coordination and Treasury, Pablo Ferreyra, maintained that “on this day we remember the memory of the 85 victims, three of whom were from Concordia. Our wish is that their memory allows us to continue building a fairer community, with tolerance, with respect, without violence, and that we may live in peace.”
