With its own resources and within the framework of the Infrastructure and Development Plan towards the Bicentennial, the Municipality of Concordia carried out comprehensive recovery and reconditioning work at the pumping stations located in the Defensa Sur.
In addition to what was already done at the Central Pumping Station, 200 million pesos were invested in the Sewage Pumping Station, where the power panels and two pumps were repaired.
These actions, together with the cleaning and maintenance work of the Concordia and Manzores streams as well as the storm drains, reservoirs, and culverts, are fundamental to protect the city against intense rainfall or eventual flooding of the Uruguay River, preventing waterlogging.
The mayor Francisco Azcué highlighted the investments that the administration has been making to strengthen storm infrastructure and prevent waterlogging: “these are decisions we have been making since the beginning of the administration, with work in different sectors. In this station, which had unfortunately been vandalized, the panels and pumps were recovered so that they are back in proper working order”.
“These works are fundamental because they protect the city when we are affected by different natural phenomena. The Municipality is in charge of investing and carrying out preventive work, but it is very important that the community collaborates with daily actions, such as not throwing items into the drains because this ends up affecting the entire system, which is precisely what we do not want”, remarked Azcué.
For his part, the Secretary of Public Works Fernando Esquivel reported that the Defensa Sur has nine operational pumps to respond to water contingencies and that the correct functioning of the entire system depends on the state of reservoirs, canals, and drains in different sectors of the city.
“If a natural phenomenon occurs, the Defensa Sur plays a very important role that is not only here physically, but starts throughout the city. All reservoirs and tributaries have to work correctly to flow here so that these pumps can operate and pump the water into the river”, specified Esquivel.
Finally, the Director of Engineering Cristian Buffa explained that the Sewage Pumping Station is equipped with 4 pumps, which operate in two ways: manual and automatic: “in the manual format, the operator resolves from the panel, and in automatic, by means of buoys and rising levels, they start operating on their own, in a staggered manner and according to need”.
Present were the Undersecretary of Public Works Mateo Sastre; the Director of Electrotechnics and Communications Andrés Villalba; and the Head of the Operational Maintenance Unit of the Defensa Sur Gabriel Noguera.
