The idol from Concordia puts all his experience at the service of the city's sports.
Mayor Francisco Azcué announced that Gustavo “La Pantera” Bou is the new Undersecretary of Sports for the Municipality of Concordia. Bou is one of the most recognized athletes in the city's history and, from this new role, he will lead municipal sports policy, together with clubs, schools, and neighborhoods.
“Gustavo represents the values we want for Concordia: effort, humility, and commitment to the people. That someone with his trajectory chooses to put his experience at the service of clubs and neighborhoods is great news for the entire city,” highlighted Azcué upon confirming the appointment.
As an administration, “our motto is to improve day by day, professionalizing work teams with people who have management capacity but also honesty. Gustavo has those characteristics and many others that will undoubtedly make a great contribution to our community,” emphasized Azcué.
A CONCORDIENSE WHO WENT FAR AND NEVER LEFT
Bou was born and raised in the Nebel neighborhood. He debuted as a professional at River Plate on March 23, 2008, and later played for Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, Liga de Quito (Ecuador), Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata, Racing Club, Tijuana (Mexico), New England Revolution (United States), and Talleres de Córdoba.
At Racing, he became an idol. He was a champion in 2014 and in the 2018/19 Superliga, and was the top scorer of the 2015 Copa Libertadores. In the United States, he was one of the figures of the MLS, with 50 goals in 111 matches for New England Revolution, and was chosen for the 2021 MLS All-Star.
COMMITMENT TO HIS CITY
Despite his international career, Bou never lost his bond with Concordia. During the 2015 flood, he was in his neighborhood, helping the affected residents. In 2022, he took over as president of Club Defensores del Barrio Nebel, the club where he took his first steps, transforming its facilities with a top-tier field. In 2024, he chose to leave professional soccer to return to play in the Liga Concordiense wearing the Nebel jersey. He also took charge of the club's daily work, even collaborating with his own hands in the improvement of the headquarters.
Therefore, for the brand-new undersecretary, this position is the natural continuation of that path. “I always said that one of my dreams was to help Concordia. Now I have the possibility to do it from another place, working so that more children can play sports and have the opportunities that I had,” expressed Bou.
“I am very eager to be able to contribute my grain of sand to help the sports of our city, accompanying the institutions. Concordia has talent in different disciplines that represent us at the national, provincial, and South American levels. That is where I feel the Undersecretariat of Sports needs to be,” remarked Bou.
WHAT ADDS TO CONCORDIA
In Concordia, sports are much more than competition. They are one of the pillars of the city's social fabric: in every neighborhood club, on every field, and in every sandlot, belonging, support, values, and opportunities are built for thousands of children and families.
With Gustavo Bou at the head of the Undersecretariat, that entire fabric gains an example for the children of the neighborhoods. It also adds the knowledge of high performance to accompany the training of local athletes and the real experience of someone who knows from the inside the daily needs of a neighborhood club.
Furthermore, due to his trajectory and his national and international recognition, Bou will be an ambassador for Concordia, capable of giving visibility to the city and opening doors to attract events, proposals, and resources for sports in Concordia.
The mayor concluded by highlighting the direction of the administration: “We want sports to reach every neighborhood, and no one is better than Gustavo to lead that work together with the clubs of Concordia.”
