As a key preventive action against the advance of the “El Niño” climate phenomenon and the potential rising of the Uruguay River, through the Provincial Government and the Argentine Delegation to the Mixed Technical Commission of Salto Grande (CTM), the Municipality of Concordia received emergency power generators that were allocated to the South Defense Pumping Station.
These units guarantee energy backup so that the extraction pumps continue to operate continuously in the event of power supply outages caused by storms or severe weather.
After the installation and corresponding connections of the generators were completed on-site, functional tests were carried out.
“The tests of the power generators were carried out, the results have been positive, and that gives us the peace of mind of knowing that in the event of a prolonged power outage in the city, the operation of the South Defense Pumping Station is guaranteed, which plays a fundamental role during days of heavy rain or the rising of the Uruguay River,” stated Mayor Francisco Azcué.
In that vein, the mayor remarked that “we have been carrying out many preventive actions throughout this time in the face of the possible effects of El Niño, but believe it or not, Concordia did not have these elements, and in the event of a power outage, the pumps would stop working and we were facing the possibility of something serious happening.”
Today, thanks to the joint work with the Provincial Government and the Argentine Delegation of Salto Grande, “it was possible to obtain these units, which makes us better prepared for a potential contingency,” maintained Azcué.
The South Defense Pumping Station is the most important civil and water containment infrastructure that Concordia has. Its main function is to mitigate the advance of the rising Uruguay River and control flooding caused by heavy rains, preventing thousands of families in historic and coastal neighborhoods from suffering losses due to waterlogging.
