With the objective of advancing a response protocol for the possible arrival and impact of the “El Niño” phenomenon in Concordia, a new meeting of the Emergency Operations Committee (COE) was held this morning.
During the meeting, led by mayor Francisco Azcué, work was done on a planning and simulation proposal developed by the 6th Tank Cavalry Regiment “Blandengues,” where the functions and responsibilities of the institutions and organizations that make up the COE were established.
This joint action will allow for the advance preparation of procedures to be carried out in response to the effects the phenomenon could have, establishing a scale of actions according to the possible magnitude of the climatic event, such as the number of families to be evacuated, accommodation spaces, health or food assistance, and transfers, among other points.
PREDICTABILITY AND MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY
In this regard, mayor Azcué pointed out first that although it is not known exactly when this phenomenon will occur and what magnitude it will have, “what was done in this meeting was to propose possible scenarios depending on the river level, how many families would be affected, and based on that, what resources we have to face that situation.”
“Everything that happens during this phenomenon will affect our city and many families, which is why we reiterate the request to residents to keep themselves informed through the official channels of the Municipality. We ask for responsibility because when false information is generated, it causes concern and prevents us from acting efficiently,” he remarked.
In that sense, he maintained that this is why they are working in advance “with an operational COE, with a response protocol, made up of experienced institutions that allow us to prepare in advance in case it is necessary to intervene or act.”
Finally, Azcué reported that in a next meeting of the Emergency Operations Committee, planned for the first days of July, the response procedures will be established according to the priorities marked in this Thursday's meeting.
The COE is made up of different areas of the Municipality of Concordia; representatives of the Argentine Army; Argentine Naval Prefecture; Volunteer and Sapper Firefighters; Entre Ríos Police; National Gendarmerie; Electric Cooperative; Mixed Technical Commission of Salto Grande and the Argentine Red Cross.
