The Decentralized Sanitary Works Entity (EDOS) is carrying out an information campaign providing advice for the proper use of the sewage and rainwater network. On repeated occasions, when the organization's crews arrive to carry out repairs, they encounter situations that evidence misuse of the network, which results in harm to the entire community. For this reason, various important tips are reiterated to keep in mind in order to collaborate so that the service continues to improve.
It is important to keep in mind that it is prohibited to connect rainwater drains to the sewage network. This is because when this happens, the transport capacity of the sewage pipes is saturated, as they are not sized to receive rainwater (up to ten times greater than household discharges), and overflows are caused through manholes, often lifting the covers above the road level.
Only liquids from sanitary fixtures or excreta, water from washing clothes and personal hygiene, water from washing food, food preparation, and dish rinsing water should be discharged into the household sewage system.
At the same time, the importance of not throwing clothing, fabrics, iron, plastics, and/or any other type of bulky waste into the sewage network is reiterated, which has been detected on repeated occasions as the cause of the network's malfunction.
What does it imply that there are these clandestine rainwater connections to the sewer?
That the primary network collapses.
Many residents of the city send rainwater along with sewage. The pipes break and produce spills. Sediment also obstructs the collectors.
Household rainwater drains should end in the streets. However, numerous residents, to avoid expenses or damage to the floors of their houses, connect the pipes through which rainwater flows to the sewage network, which causes serious damage.
When storms break out in the city, the sewage collectors receive abundant rainwater that arrives through the houses' rainwater connections, which means that between the organic sewage material and a greater volume of water, there is no air space left to evacuate gases; which can cause the overflow of manholes, and even in many cases also directly affect the internal network of homes.
Finally, it should be remembered that the Decentralized Sanitary Works Entity is not permitted to carry out unblocking of systems inside homes, only from the municipal line outwards. For inquiries or complaints, you can contact the following telephone numbers: 424-786 / 422-8613 / 421-1893
