Exhibition: On the other side of the Gaze

Looking seems, in principle, a silent act.
But the gaze is never innocent. Between the observer and the observed, something more happens: reality is cropped, displaced, mutated.
To observe is, in a way, to enter into that which is observed.
Perhaps drawing is born from a similar restlessness.
Carina Amarillo looks at the city, bodies, architecture, technology, everyday scenes, and also that which belongs to the territory of the imaginary. By crossing them with her gaze, the images cease to be exactly what they were.
The line becomes a gesture.
Contrast, a territory of tension.
The detail gains density.
The recognizable begins to shift.
A body can dissolve, an everyday scene become unsettling, a city transform into another. The exterior can reveal something intimate.
The drawings, inks, and paintings gathered in this exhibition do not respond to a single theme. They are crossed by the same need: to look until the image begins to reverberate, amplify, transform.
On the other side of the gaze speaks of that uncertain territory between the world and its representation.
A place where to observe is to intervene.
Where to interpret is to transform.
Where the image ceases to be merely a surface and begins, as well, to return our gaze.
Perhaps that is why a work is never completely finished when the artist abandons it.
It remains there, on the other side.
Waiting for another gaze.
